THIS IS THE SENIOR VERSION - FOR THE JUNIOR VERSION CLICK HERE

We confidently predict that this new Gilbert and Sullivan style show will be a massive hit. This delicious pastiche has an outstandingly tuneful score, with script and lyrics bursting with wit and humour.
In a plot which has echoes of The Magnificent Seven, Daisy, daughter of Buttercup, seeks help to thwart a band of outrageous female pirates, who have taken her lover as a hostage. With the help of Iolanthe, the Fairy Queen, and the Princess Ida, she enlists the aid of The Mikado, The Scorcerer, The Duke of Plaza-Toro, Admiral Sir Joseph Porter, and Major-General Stanley to save the day.

Audiences are bound to be captivated, whether Gilbert and Sullivan fans or not, as this superb musical stands up in its own right. The script and lyrics have a Gilbertian ring to them, but uncluttered by heavy Victorianism. The songs have the soaring melodies, thumping rhythms and catchy tunes that capture the true Sullivan flavour. A few of them - Ribbic, Poor Static One, for example - are clever parodies of some of the pairs familiar successes. But far from being a " send-up " this glorious show is a genuine, affectionate tribute to the incomparable duo.
With 11 principal parts, and a chorus that varies from Islanders to Pirates, and from Faries to Policemen, all with plenty of lines to contribute, pupils and staff will find this entertaining and delightful, as well as being a rewarding challenge. If it is your experience that girls tend to outnumber boys in their enthusiasm to appear in school productions, this is definitely the show for you !

To perform this shortened version you will need a minimum of half a dozen talented solo singer / actors. Average singing voices can take care of the rest - though we are confident that the catchy choruses will make your cast sound superb.

As another plus point, the costuming will not present any major problems : In fact, a hilarious highlight must undoubtedly be the arrival of the Policemen towards the end of the show !

Band parts are available below.
A full orchestral backing track is also available.
Duration about 2 hours.
Suitable for: Senior Schools (11 - 18) - Youth Groups and Amateur Theatre Groups

The Writer - Malcolm Sircom

Malcolm read music at Cambridge University before entering the theatre as a Musical Director. Probably the highlight of his career was a 4 year world tour of the ˜Rocky Horror Show'. At the same time he honed in his writing skills with a series of Pantomimes and Children's musicals, which were performed professionally all over the country including his hit 'Mr Men Musical' in London's West End.

He started writing schools musicals with 'Ebenezer', which coincided with the launching of Musicline. Since then his many follow-ups have been so successful worldwide that they have enabled him to retire from the theatre to concentrate solely on this aspect of his talents.

His major hobbies are bridge, cricket, and writing musicals for schools! People often ask him if he is a teacher, as his shows have such a rapport with kids. The answer is no - he is an entertainer pure and simple, backed by the experience of years in the professional theatre. He claims to be still a child at heart, and he loves working with children, which shows very much in the works he produces for them.

THE PINAFORE PIRATES

ACT ONE

On the Quayside of Paragonia, the islanders sing Song: “PARAGONIA” about the delight of their island. Daisy Corcoran enters, and puts them to shame, by reminding them of the ravages of the female pirates who dock every three months, and demand provisions. She then sings, with the islanders Song: “DAUGHTER OF BUTTERCUP”, about her proud parentage [Captain Corcoran from HMS Pinafore and Buttercup from the same] and how, shipwrecked, she was washed up on Paragonia’s shore.  She then points out that the pirates, to make sure their demands are met, always take a hostage with them. This tine they’ve taken her lover Christopher with them, which has stirred her into action. She leaves to get help in defeating the pirates. The islanders finish the scene with a short reprise of “DAUGHTER OF BUTTERCUP”

Onboard the pirate ship the female pirates swirl on, singing Song: ”PINAFORE PIRATES”.  They greet their Pirate Queen, who makes them repeat their Pirate Oath to have nothing to do with men, till their 7 years’ piracy is up. Then Song: “THE PIRATE QUEEN”  A pirate then brings up the hostage Christopher. Despite their oath, they all sigh romantically at his handsome appearance, but Christopher explains what a penance it is being parted from Daisy for 3 months. Song: “THE ANGUISH OF LOVE” at the end of which the pirates [except the Queen] burst into sympathetic tears. The Queen berates them, and sends Christopher below. To take their minds off their romantic trauma, the Queen decides its time for food, and sends for Sam O’Nella, the Irish cook, who regales them with the culinary treats he has in store. Song: “IRISH STEW”

In a woodland glade fairies sing and dance Song: “FAIRY FEET”, rather spoiled by the efforts of Nanette, and un-coordinated fairy. Invisible to mortals, they are unobserved by Daisy, who enters and quietly weeps, her rescue mission being a complete failure so far. The fairies, feeling sorry for her, summon their Queen, Iolanthe, who, being half-mortal is visible to Daisy. On hearing of Daisy’s tribulations, she summons Princess Ida to join her in the fight against the pirates,, and promises to find 5 men she knows [from G&S operettas]. They finish the scene with the sprightly Song: “THREE DETERMINED LADIES”

Back on the pirate ship, all are relaxing on a calm night Song: “CALM SEAS AND A PROSPEROUS VOYAGE” The ladies go down below for dinner and Sam chats with Christopher, finding him to be still love-sick. He promises his a special meal to take his mind off it, and leaves Christopher alone to sing Song: “RIBIC!” [about a heart-broken frog] Sam returns with the dish – frogs’ legs! Christopher hastily departs to throw up, leaving Sam to close the scene with a few lines of “RIBIC!”

AT the Quayside, the islanders are eagerly awaiting Daisy’s return, but are initially disappointed to find she has only two women with her. However Princess Ida introduces, in turn The Right.Hon.Sir Joseph Porter [from HMS Pinafore] Song: “ADMIRABLE ADMIRAL”, then the Mikado  Song: “THE GREAT MIKADO”, then the Sorcerer Song: “SORCERER”, then the Duke of Plaza-Toro [The Gondoliers] Song: “SPANISH GRANDEE”, and finally Major-General Stanley [The Pirates of Penzance] Song: “EDUCATED MAJOR-GENERAL” All these 5 songs are “patter” songs, and when the islanders give them a huge welcome, the 5 repay them by singing the 5 songs simultaneously!  Then Daisy introduces them to the task ahead, and all sing ACT ONE FINALE

ACT TWO

On the pirate ship the pirates sing Song: “LAND HO!” The 3 months are up and they’re ready to dock in Paragonia, but the Queen has an intuitive feeling that all will not be well. The pirates have the same feeling, and have other feelings too, which Sam underlines with Song: “PRETTY LADIES” and leaves them with the immortal words “You’re all as broody as hens!” They agree, and the Queen promises to review their Pirate Oath if they undertake this last mission against whatever awaits them on shore. Reprise: “PINAFORE PIRATES”

On the quayside the 7 plan their strategy, and decide that their respectively high social status will be too much for the humble pirates, who will surrender. Daisy & the islanders join Song: “PROTOCOL”

The pirates [without their Queen] appear, sobbing, dressed as respectable young ladies. Song: “DAMSELS IN DISTRESS” They totally fool the 7, and the Pirate Queen appears. At her order the pirates disarm the 7. Sam leads on Christopher and chains himto a bollard. Daisy is delighted to see him, but sad they are still not together properly. Song: “POOR STATIC ONE”

Then the Sorcerer speaks up, and casts a spell on the Pirates & their Queen which renders them immobile. Sam releases Christopher, and Daisy rushes to embrace him. Song: “LOVE’S YOUNG DREAM.”

The Pirates are released, and their Queen says there is only one thing left for them to do –throw themselves into the sea! The only thing that would stop them would be the love of a good man, which they have never found. Major General Stanley stops them from their purpose by introducing “the flower of British manhood” The Policemen enter. Song: “THE BRITISH POLICEMAN”

All is well, but then the 7 are reluctant to return to their boring day jobs, and decide to take over the pirate ship. Sam re-enlists with them, but they need a quarter-master. Nanette appears to ask for the job, Iolanthe agrees and makes her visible. Clumsy Nanette is so delighted she leaps in joy, knocking half the cast over, and falls into the sea.

The 7 deside that their piracy will be base on Finale: “Protocol Piracy”

This was a great show! The music is at the right difficulty for 10 to 15 year olds (although somewhat high in range) and its definitely G&S style! The show is well-written and funny, although some of the references are obscure. Well done!

Our "look" was the French Revolution complete with a "Marie-Antoinette" Iolanthe. The boys loved the whole idea of pirates - even if they were girls! When the fairy grove scene opened, the whole audience let out a huge "ohh!" Excellent all girl show
